Vuma.earth is a platform that enables users to create and support local petitions and campaigns with an aim to drive community- powered change.

VUMA means “to spread like wildfire” in Swahili (spoken throughout East Africa) and “to be in agreement” in Nguni languages (spoken in Southern African countries). Since the platform aims to achieve change in affected communities and create awareness of the issues they face, it made perfect sense for us to call it VUMA.EARTH.

To start a petition, click on the Start a petition button on the homepage and follow the guided steps to create your campaign.

Starting or starting a petition on VUMA.EARTH is completely free. However if you would like to donate towards Greenpeace Africa, the organisation running and moderating the platform, you can do so here.

  • Browse the homepage or use the search function to find petitions that align with your interests or relevant to your area.
  • b. You can also connect to a local group to find petitions that you would like to support.

Each petition has social media sharing options like X, Facebook and WhatsApp, and a unique link that you can share via email. It comes with a pre-populated message so you don’t have to think of what to send the link with.

Yes you can edit your petition after publishing by accessing your account and making the necessary changes. Note that if people have already signed the petition and you wish to make a significant change such as adding a demand, it will have to undergo an admin approval process.

Yes you can delete a petition even after publishing by just accessing your account settings and clicking on the delete option. Note that once this is done, there is no way to retrieve it.

Yes you can start multiple petitions on causes that are affecting your community at the same time. Although it might be a little bit challenging, we advise you to focus on one at a time.

Yes you can. We have a cool feature called partnerships where you can co-create campaigns with multiple partners. Click on the Contact Us page available on the website or email us directly on contact@vuma.earth if you’re interested in doing this and we can help you with that.

It only takes 24hrs for your petition to be reviewed and approved by an administrator. Incase there are some issues with your petition, an administrator will reach out to you directly via email to sort it out before your petition can be approved.

You can create or view petitions in English and French. We encourage you to create a petition in a language that your target audience understands and make it accessible to not only your community but also garner support globally.

Currently, VUMA.EARTH does not provide built in translation tools. However you can use external tools such as deepl.com or google translate to translate your petition into multiple languages to reach a wider audience.

VUMA.EARTH primarily focuses on issues within Africa, you can create petitions addressing international issues that also affect Africa. Ensure that your petition resonates with a global audience if the target is international.
