How VUMA helped me take action in my community

Wow, what can I say? As an environmental activist, we often encounter so many different environmental and social injustices that it can feel overwhelming. We know what we’re up against, but realistically, we also know that we can’t address every issue alone—we need assistance. The truth is, we need more than one voice; we need many voices to see what we’ve seen and to speak out. After all, it’s our constitutional right.

We often feel like we’re alone and that our voices will go unheard. But we’re not alone. We have Vuma, a petition site managed by Greenpeace Africa.

I (and so many others) have signed countless petitions over the years, but now I’ve had the chance to create my own. All I had to do was follow simple, clear instructions. Basically, I just needed to share my story and environmental concerns, and Greenpeace Africa assisted me with the process. They amplified my petition on their various social media platforms, giving it a much-needed boost.

To be honest, with my first petition, I wasn’t expecting much to come of it. But to my surprise, once my Vuma.earth petition was launched and amplified by Greenpeace Africa, it took off. Signatures kept coming in. My voice was no longer alone. I wasn’t just a single individual standing on a soapbox, shouting into the void. I was part of a movement. People listened, and they added their signatures. We now had many voices, and they could all finally be heard.

I am grateful for the power of a simple, easy-to-use petition platform like Vuma. It has given me—and others—the ability to demand action on environmental and social justice concerns. My petitions have reached the relevant municipal or even government departments. Throughout the entire petition journey, Greenpeace Africa offered support, advice, and updates.

Right now, I have yet another live petition that needs your voice: De-Coal-onise Tendele. It’s fighting for a future free from coal mining’s devastating impact on my community. Together, we can demand justice and protect our environment.

I am finally heard, we are finally heard and all it took was a small decision to take action on an easy to use petition site, vuma.earth.
